Standing water, especially from stormwater or sewer backup, deposits bacteria and fungal spores across every surface it touched — carpet backing, wall cavities, sub-floor timbers, HVAC returns. Because the smell is biological, not the moisture itself. Mould and bacteria growing in materials that dried slowly keep producing musty odour after the surfaces feel dry. UV-C treats the microbial source on every surface the light reaches, which is where most of it sits — but it is line-of-sight, so it will not reach inside a wall cavity, and it will not substitute for finding a moisture source that is still active.
